A shopper describes what they need to an AI assistant, compares a few options, and decides to buy. Whether the purchase can be completed there, and whether it produces a valid order in your systems, depends on what your store can answer when the assistant asks.

The same applies in B2B. A purchasing team can instruct an agent to source parts that meet a given specification, compare terms and availability, and place the order within its approval rules. That only works if your catalog, contract pricing, and stock data are accurate and reachable.

What you keep is as important as what you gain. With delegated payment handling, payment credentials pass through your existing payment service provider. Your fraud rules, 3D Secure checks, decline handling, and retry behavior stay in place, and you remain the merchant of record, so the customer relationship and the transaction stay yours.

What ACP is, and what it leaves to your store

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard, co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe and published under an open source license, that defines how an AI agent and a merchant exchange cart, payment, and order information so a purchase can be completed on a shopper's behalf. It can be implemented as a REST interface or as an MCP server. The standard itself is free. The cost sits in connecting it to the systems that already run your store.

ACP defines the exchange. It does not define your commerce logic. Tax configuration, returns and exchanges, fraud modeling, and how your payment provider authorizes and captures a charge all stay where they are today, which means your systems have to return the correct answer at the moment an agent asks for one.

That is also why a ready-made connector rarely finishes the job. Variants may come from a PIM. Available stock may sit in an inventory or ERP system. The final price may depend on discounts, fulfillment choices, or tax rules evaluated during checkout. We map ACP operations to the systems that already control those decisions rather than replacing them, on Magento, WooCommerce, Umbraco, Shopify, and custom builds.

Why this is integration work, not a plugin

Some platforms offer ready-made plugins that let AI agents communicate with a store. But these plugins are built for a standard setup. They don't automatically understand how your business handles product data, volume pricing, stock, or a customized checkout. Connecting those parts is where most of the work lies.

What is the difference between UCP and ACP?

They are two sets of rules for the same job: letting AI assistants find your products and help customers buy them. UCP comes from Google and Shopify, and ACP comes from OpenAI and Stripe. They are deployed on different assistants today, so which one matters first depends on where your customers shop. The underlying work is the same either way. Your product information, prices, and stock levels have to be accurate and readable by machines, and with that in place, supporting either one, or both, is far more straightforward.

Do we have to choose between UCP and ACP?

Not to get started. Preparing for both is mostly the same work, so we build the groundwork that serves either. Enabling a specific protocol then becomes a configuration decision rather than a rebuild.

Does this replace our existing checkout?

No. It adds a purchase path alongside your website and app checkout. You keep your payment provider and fulfill orders as you do today.

Can we keep our existing payment provider?

In most cases, yes. Payment continues through your existing provider, including its fraud checks and card security steps, and you remain the merchant of record. Support varies by provider and by route, which is one of the first things the audit establishes.

Is the ACP protocol free?

Yes. ACP is published under an open source license and is free to implement. Connecting it to your commerce systems requires engineering, testing, monitoring, and ongoing version management.

What if our product data is not ready?

That is a common starting point rather than a blocker. Agents compare products using the information they can read, so thin or inconsistent content limits which products get selected. Who handles tax, returns, and fraud?

You do, through the systems that handle them now. ACP defines the exchange between the agent and your store, not your commerce rules, so your systems must return the correct tax, stock, and price when checkout is requested and continue to own returns and fraud decisions.

How do we know an agent can actually buy?

You get conformance results showing the implementation meets the specification, and end-to-end tests that run real purchases.
