How we work
We have built software for businesses since 1998. In those 28 years we’ve kept what works and thrown out what doesn’t, and this page is the result: how we understand your business, how we price, how we deliver, and how we behave when something goes wrong. Read it before you talk to us. It will save you time, and it tells you exactly what you can hold us to.

Understanding your business

Good software decisions start with business understanding, not technology. Before we recommend anything, we ask what you're trying to achieve, what your clients need, and where your current setup helps or hinders you.

Then we recommend honestly. Sometimes that means telling you the simpler, cheaper option is the right one. That honesty costs us revenue now and then; it's also why clients stay with us for years.

Specialists, not generalists

Good full-stack developers are rare. People who are genuinely strong at front-end, back-end, optimization, deployment, and communication all at once barely exist, and companies that promise them usually deliver someone mediocre at most of it.

We solve the problem differently. Together with each developer, we find out what they want to do and what they're good at, and we steer them down that path through formal training, mentoring, and on-the-job coaching. A WordPress front-end developer does WordPress front-end development. A Magento back-end developer builds Magento back-end solutions. As people grow, they move into new areas if they want to.

For you, the result is simple: every task is done by someone who does exactly that kind of work every day. Quality goes up. Stress goes down. Both sides win.

Choosing the right way of working

Every company is different. Some continuously improve their software and systems through smaller tasks. Others occasionally need a larger project completed as quickly as possible.

That is why we offer two complementary software development engagement models, with a structured planning phase for large projects.

Continuous Monthly Development

Continuous Monthly Development is for companies that regularly improve their software but don't have enough work to justify a full-time developer.

Instead of requesting quotations every time something needs changing, you simply send your tasks whenever they arise. We prioritize the work together and keep your software and systems moving forward.

There are three plans. With Care and Care Plus, you pay one fixed monthly price; project management and the meetings covered by your plan are included. With Care Ultimate, you approve a fixed price for every task or group of tasks before work begins.

Typical work includes bug fixes, new functionality, design improvements, integrations, AI implementation, performance optimization, mobile app improvements, brainstorming new ideas and solutions, testing, and ongoing technical support.

Fixed Price Projects

A Fixed Price Project is one defined undertaking: a new build or a major upgrade, delivered at one agreed price that is fixed before development begins. It's the right choice when completing the work sooner is important.

Before development begins, we work with you to understand your requirements, define the project scope, and agree on the expected deliverables. Based on everything we've learned, we then calculate a fixed price, using our AI-powered estimation tool and careful manual review.

Depending on the size and complexity of the project, we may prepare a project plan, conduct research, review existing software, create prototypes, or perform technical analysis before development starts.

Project Scoping for large projects

Very large projects cannot responsibly be given an immediate fixed price. They must be scoped first.

Project Scoping is typically the planning phase of a bigger project. Its outcome is the exact definition of what will be developed, including the price. Nine times out of ten, that outcome becomes a Fixed Price Project; occasionally, Continuous Monthly Development is the better next step.

How you get a price

Getting a price from us is simple, and there are no strings attached. If you don't want to continue after our proposal, just tell us. We won't follow up.

At the first meeting you meet a technical Project Manager, and often Peter, the founder of 1902 Software. You explain what you need done and what your goals are. Together we then determine which way of working is right for you: one of our three plans (Care, Care Plus, or Care Ultimate) or a Fixed Price Project, which for large projects starts with a Project Scoping phase.

For well-defined projects that don't require a Project Scoping phase, we then present a fixed price proposal, a projected timeline, and a clear plan for how we move forward, typically within two to four working days of the meeting.

For very large projects, we can't responsibly give an immediate fixed price; those begin with Project Scoping, and the outcome of the scoping is the exact definition of what will be developed, including the price.

For Continuous Monthly Development (Care and Care Plus), there's nothing to quote. The plans and their fixed monthly prices are on our pricing page, and you can start whenever you're ready.

How projects are delivered

Delivery follows the way of working you chose.

For Continuous Monthly Development, you submit tasks whenever they arise. We prioritize the work together and improve your software and systems continuously over time.

For Fixed Price Projects, the scope is agreed before development begins. That lets us assign the right developers and specialists from day one and complete the project as efficiently as possible.

Many clients use both at the same time.

Full transparency in our project management system

You always know where your project stands.

We use a project management and communication tool where you can create requests, follow every task from scoping to completion, see who said what and when, and communicate directly with the people working on your tasks.

If your own developers or a third-party supplier are involved, we're happy to give everyone full access. In our experience, 90% of all collaboration difficulties boil down to poor communication. So we remove the possibility.

Our services

Ecommerce (Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce), websites and CMS (WordPress, Umbraco), custom software and .NET, web applications and React, mobile apps (iOS, Android, React Native, .NET MAUI), AI development and AI agents, design, and testing, and many others, all delivered by dedicated specialist teams. See what we do for the full overview.

Taking over existing projects

Many of our clients originally worked with another software development outsourcing company. We regularly take over existing systems: we review the code and architecture, verify access and accounts, and continue development with minimal disruption. See our onboarding page for how a takeover works in practice.

Communication

You get one Project Manager as your single point of contact, fluent in English, backed by our project management system where every task, decision, and discussion is documented. Meetings happen over Microsoft Teams. We deliberately keep communication in these two channels so nothing gets lost across scattered tools.

Quality assurance: our in-house testing team tests everything

Many companies are sloppy about testing. Often the same developer who did the task also tests it. At 1902 Software, testing is done by our in-house testing team, separate from the developers.

Here's how it works. We develop on local workstations first. When a task or set of tasks is finished, it's deployed to a development server, where our in-house testers go through everything. Issues found are returned to the developers, and the cycle continues until no more errors are found. Only then does your Project Manager tell you the work is completed and give you access to review it. Once you've approved the output, and after any small changes you ask for, we deploy to the live server and run another test.

The result: the time you spend testing our output drops dramatically, because everything we deliver has already been through professional testing.

We also offer automated testing, where regression tests run automatically. This lowers testing costs and allows changes to be deployed several times a day with confidence.

Depending on the project, our quality work also includes technical reviews, code reviews, performance testing, security improvements, documentation, and release validation.

The same team supports you after launch

We take post-project support as seriously as the project itself. The same team that built your solution handles the support afterwards.

Working with a team you already know saves time and money. It also removes the classic bottleneck where a separate support team must first consult the developers to understand the solution before they can help you.

Support inquiries are answered within 24 working hours, usually much faster. Outside regular business hours, you can reach our support team at support@1902.software.

We work with your team and your suppliers

As your software development partner, we're used to working alongside other teams, whether that's your own in-house developers or another third-party supplier.

Multiple teams on one project is a known challenge. After 28 years we know how to avoid the problems: shared access to the project management tool, clear task ownership, and open communication. Everybody sees the same board, the same status, and the same discussions.

How we use AI in our work

Our developers, designers, testers, and project managers use modern AI-assisted tools for planning, design, development, and testing. This results in higher quality and faster delivery. Every solution is still thoroughly reviewed, tested, and verified by experienced software developers and testers before delivery.

Commonly asked questions

Can you work with software developed by another company?

Yes. We regularly take over websites, webshops, mobile applications and business systems developed by other software development companies.

Which way of working is right for us?

If your business regularly improves existing software, Continuous Monthly Development is usually the best choice. If you’re planning a larger, well-defined initiative where faster delivery is important, a Fixed Price Project is often the better option. Large projects typically begin with Project Scoping.

Do you provide design and testing as separate services?

Yes. Design and testing can be delivered independently or as part of a larger software development project.

Can you help us before development begins?

Yes. We regularly help businesses evaluate ideas, review existing software, discuss different approaches and plan projects before development begins. For large projects, we recommend a Project Scoping engagement.

What technologies do you support?

We support Magento, WooCommerce, Shopify, WordPress, Umbraco, .NET, React, mobile applications, cloud platforms, AI technologies and many other modern software platforms. If your technology isn’t listed, please contact us.
